Important lessons in blogging
MANILA, Philippines – A question that I’ve often asked fellow bloggers in this column: what important lessons have you learned from blogging all these years

? What tips can you give other bloggers on getting started and staying put? This question was also asked of me in a tech TV show this week. Of course, being old in this game, I didn’t equivocate in the answer. Some of the lessons I’ve learned …

3 Free WordPress Plugins I Definitely Use

An advantage of WordPress is the feature of allowing plugins to expand its capability. Some of these plugins would help to save time in the blog posting, while some would enhance the readers’ experience in the blog. The best thing of these plugins is, most of them are free. However, there are thousands of free plugins available, and it could be confusing to find out which plug-in to use.

These are 3 free plugins which I definitely use in the WordPress sites I created.

Akismet Plugin

In the internet world, there are lots of spams, including spam comments. On each day, there could be tens of spam comments on each WordPress site. It would take up a lot of the site owner’s time to clear these spam comments. On the other hand, these spam comments, if not modulated, may not reflect well for the site.

Luckily, there is the Akismet plugin available. The Akismet is a free plugin which help to remove spam comments in our WordPress site. The use of Akismet requires registration for an API key.

Once registered, Akismet will effectively help to reduce the number of spam s may slip through. In my experience, the success rate for Akismet is over 98%.

Simple Tags Plugin

We always tag our post with keywords. This is to enable for the post to be easily found and organized. The default tagging function in WordPress only suggested the most commonly used keywords within the site. These keywords may not even be relevant to the post.

I am using the Simple Tag Plugin to help me in the Keyword tagging.

The Simple Tags can help to go through the post. It would suggest relevant keywords

from the site, Yahoo and other tools. This is very useful for lazy person like me. I just need to click and select the relevant keywords.

Yet Another Related Posts Plugin

I learned that there are plugins which would suggest related posts for further reading. These plugins would put an additional segment in each post. This segment provides links to posts within the site which are relevant to this post based on the keywords. (This is where the Simple Tag Plugin is so useful.)

In general, such related posts plugin would improve reader’s experience in the site. After reading a post, he or she would find it useful to check out relevant posts. And this would keep the reader interested in the site.

I found that there are a few related posts plugin available. So far, I have been using Yet Another Related Posts, and I believe it will be helpful for you as well.

Self Hosting Option for Website Owners

Self-hosting or hosting their site in their own computers is an option for website owners.

One benefit of self hosting is that they can have as much storage space as they want depending on the hard disk space. They can put in tons of videos, full-size images and other media without worrying about paying additional cost to hosting companies.

On top of that, computer and accessories are getting cheaper by the days. There are also many open source software and online guides for self hosting.

Recently, a friend offered to give me free hosting on his computer.

Personally, I do not favor self-hosting or hosting the websites in own computers. There are other disadvantages involved in self hosting as well.

First, there is the cost of maintenance. Self hosting means that the hosting computer has to be switched on 24 hours a day, or else there will be a loss of service. Furthermore, the owners have to be on standby in case of any failure.

This means that, the site Online >Secondly, there is the danger of violating the service provider’s contract. Most service providers impose restriction for the customers. The restriction could include not allowing the customer to run services, like website hosting.

To me, paying for a reputable hosting company to host my sites means that, I do not have these worries.

They have network professionals on standby to prevent any loss of service. There is also no worry about violating the service providers’ contract.

Self hosting can be an option to many web site owners. Personally, I rather pay a hosting company to host my sites.

Why Having a Dedicated Webpage on Top of Facebook Page?

There is a trend for organizations or businesses to create a Facebook page without having a dedicated webpage.

Facebook page is easy to set up and provide the benefit of easy communications.

However, organizations or businesses which rely only on Facebook page, is missing out a bigger pie. Traditional webpage, regardless of static pages or content management system based, still has its usefulness in the today’s age of social networking.

Firstly, a person interested in the service or product is more likely to do a search using traditional search engines (like Google, Bing or Yahoo!) than to use a Facebook search. By having a dedicated webpage opened up the opportunity being found by these search engines.

The other reason is that, a professionally done webpage can add credibility to the business or organization. This webpage is the virtual store front gives the visitors the first impression. Personally, I would assess how informative is the webpage and how easily I can access to this information. In general, I would more likely to have trust with a page with a lot of easily accessible information. On the other hand, a Facebook page may not be able to provide such ease.

Overall, I find that, a dedicated webpage still has e. A Facebook page is a very useful social marketing tool to remain in touch and build connection. Having both would definitely help the organization or business in its functions.

Types of Blogs

A weblog (or simply blog) is a website that ‘publishes’ or features articles (which are called ‘blog posts’, ‘posts’, or ‘entries’), written by an individual or a group that make use of any or a combination of straight texts, photographs or images (photo blog), video (video blog), audio files (audio blog,) and hyperlinks.

Usually presented and arranged in reverse chronological order, nagement system and online publishing platform.

A typical blog has the following components:

· Post date -the date and time of the blog entry

· Category – the category that the blog belongs to

· Title – the title of the blog

· Main body – the main content of the blog

· RSS and track back – links the blog back from other sites

· Comments – commentaries that are added by readers

· Permalinks – the URL of the full article

· Other optional items – calendar, archives, blog rolls, and add-ons or plug-ins

A blog can also have a footer, usually found at the bottom of the blog, that shows the post date, the author, the category, and the ‘stats’ ( number of comments).

There are numerous types of blogs:

1. Political blog – on news, politics, activism, and other issue based blogs (such as campaigning).

2. Personal blog – also known as online diary that may include an individual’s day-to-day experience, complaints, poems, and illicit thoughts, and communications between friends.

3. Topical blog – with focus either on a particular niche (function or position) that is usually technical in nature or a local information.

4. Health blog – on specific health issues. Medical blog is a major category of health blog that features medical news from health care professionals and/or actual patient cases.

5. Literary blog – also known as lit blog.

6. Travel blog – with focus on a traveler’s stories on a particular journey.

7. Research blog – on academic issues such as research notes.

8. Legal blog – on law (technical areas) and legal affairs; also known as ‘blawgs’.

9. Media blog – focus on falsehoods or inconsistencies in mass media; usually exclusive for a newspaper or a television network.

10. Religious blog – on religious topics

11. Educational blog – on educational applications, usually written by students and teachers.

12. Collaborative or collective blog – a specific topic written by a group of people.

13. Directory blog – contains a collection of numerous web sites.

14. Business blog – used by entrepreneurs and corporate employees to promote their businesses or talk about their work.

15. Personification blog – focus on non-human being or objects (such as dogs).

16. Spam blogs – used for promoting affiliated websites; also known as ‘splogs’.

Blogging is typically done on a regular basis. The term “blogging” refers to the act of authoring, maintaining, or adding an article to an existing blog, while the term “blogger” refers to a person or

a group who keeps a blog.

Today, more than 3 million blogs can be found in the Internet. This figure is continuously growing, as the availability of various blog software, tools, and other applications make it easier for just about anyone to update or maintain the blog (even those with little or no technical background). Because of this trend, bloggers can now be categorized into 4 main types:

· Personal bloggers – people who focus on a diary or on any topic that an individual feels strongly about.

· Business bloggers – people who focus on promoting products and services.

· Organizational bloggers – people who focus on internal or external communication in an organization or a community.

· Professional bloggers – people who are hired or paid to do blogging.

Problogging refers to blogging for a profit. Probloggers (professional bloggers) are people who make money from blogging.

Money-making opportunities for probloggers:

· Advertising programs
· RSS advertising
· Sponsorship
· Affiliate Programs
· Digital assets
· Blog network writing gigs
· Business blog writing gigs
· Non blogging writing gigs
· Flipping blogs
· Merchandising
· Consulting and speaking

Things you need to consider if you want to be successful in problogging:

1. Be patient. Problogging requires a lot of time and effort, not to mention a long-term vision.

2. Know your audience. Targeting a specific audience or group is a key to building a readership.

3. Be an ‘expert’. Focus on a specific niche topic and strive to be the “go-to” blogger on that topic.

4. Diversify. Experiment with various adds and affiliate programs that enable you to make money online .

5. Do not bore your readers. Focus on the layout. White spaces, line spacings, and bigger fonts make a blog welcoming to read.

Certainly, it is possible to earn money from blogs. One just needs to take risks, the passion, and the right attitude in order to be a successful problogger.
